Lexapro, Paxil, Zoloft, Celexa, Prozac & Effexor During Pregnancy Linked to Increased Risk of Birth Defects
Recent scientific testing has revealed significant evidence linking the use of certain antidepressant drugs with multiple different types of birth defects. The drugs that are potentially causing these birth defects are known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. SSRI antidepressants include drugs such as Zoloft, Prozac, Paxil, Effexor, Celexa, and Lexapro. Scientific studies have proven that these drugs increase the risk of birth defects on animals, and recent studies have shown an increased correlation between antidepressants taken during pregnancy and birth defects.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reported that certain popular antidepressant drugs, anti-psychotics, and seizure medicines may cause serious and severe heart and lung birth defects in the unborn infants of mothers who take those drugs during all or part of their pregnancy. Some of the birth defects that infants have been born with are:
-
Dangerous congenital heart defects
-
Atrial Septal Defect (ASD)
-
Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)
-
Holes in the Heart Wall
- Pulmonary Stenosis
-
Neural tube defects (Spina Bifida)
-
Transposition of the Greater Vessels (TGV)
-
Persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN)
-
Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS)
-
Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome
-
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
-
Transposition of the great arteries (TGA)
-
Coarctation of the Aorta (CoA)
-
Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF)
-
Congenital Heart Defects
-
Abdominal wall defects (gastroschisis & omphalocele)
-
Cranial & skull defects (craniosynostosis)
In addition to the very severe and life threatening birth defects experienced by some children, those born to mothers taking antidepressants during pregnancy are also at risk of developmental delays. Recent studies have shown that babies who are born to women taking antidepressants during pregnancy sat up for the first time on average 16 days later than babies whose mothers were not taking antidepressants during pregnancy. The same babies also walked almost a month later on average than those with mothers who weren't taking antidepressants during pregnancy.
In many cases, the mothers taking SSRI antidepressants are completely unaware that these drugs can potentially cause dangerous birth defects in their children. As a result, many women have given birth to babies with very severe birth defects, which in some cases require the infant to have multiple surgeries within days of being born. Some of the birth defects may even require the child to endure a heart transplant within months of being born.
